Our dog friendly Bed & Breakfast and Kitchen Suites is a great alternative to cabins or hotels when vacationing with your pet. We are proud that both guests traveling with dogs and those without pets feel at home here. If you plan to bring your dog, please be sure to read through our specific requirements for canine visitors, below, paying particular attention to the differences between dogs staying in Bed & Breakfast Suites and dogs staying in Kitchen Suites*.
Our children (above) are friendly and willing to play with children their own size. They play rough, so smaller children are cautioned against entertaining that thought. Our furry children have a cordoned off (electronic fence) area so when walking your furries they will bark and carry on. They are just saying, “hey, come over here and play” or they are speaking to us, letting us know there is someone on the property.
We love dogs, and they love it here, too! Here canines and their two-legged companions will find spacious rooms (all with private outside entrances) and 38 acres to explore. We have a large play area great for games of Frisbee or ball retrieving, and beautiful mowed walking trails winding through the meadows with awesome views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Resident canines Ruger and Benelli especially recommend the trail along our spring-fed stream with small waterfall and viewing deck (the pool below the second waterfall is a great place for a cooling dip). We also have outside washing stations (weather permitting), shampoo, dog towels — and Ruger and Benelli are glad to their leash if needed. We provide a list of dog-friendly attractions, dining and shops, and love to help you find our favorites: (A work in progress www.petfriendlylexingtonva.com). Goshen Pass is spectacular (hiking trails and picnic areas along a rushing river gorge — all completely accessible by car via the road that winds through the gorge); Natural Bridge allows dogs down by the bridge and along their nature trail, and there are hundreds of miles of hiking trails in the Blue Ridge Mountains and the National Forest (we provide maps and directions). Canoe trips on the James River are also an option, along with a visit to the Asian Pear Orchard, Boxerwood Gardens or Rockbridge Vineyard where canine companions (e.g., the “humans”) can sample the wine. In the evening, Hull’s Drive-In theater is great — for popcorn lovers, we recommend the extra-large, so everyone can have some.
Here are our requirements for visiting canines:
- Dogs must be at least 6 months old (house trained).
- We must be notified ahead of time that dogs are coming.
- We request that dogs do not enter the main breakfast / check-in area of the Inn
- Beds and furniture are reserved for humans only.
- Barking dogs cannot be left unattended.
- Dogs must be leashed around the house, gardens and barn/horses — they are welcome to run and play off leash on our trails and fields –over 30 acres of dog heaven.
Dogs cannot be left unattended in the room at any time. Weather permitting; we will serve breakfast on the back deck where dogs are welcome. If the weather is not suitable for outside dining, we ask that dogs wait in the car during breakfast, as our main indoor dining/living room is the only place on our property not suitable for visiting pets. Our quiet country location well away from any road makes the “wheeled crate” (the car) a safe option.
Dogs may be left unattended only if crated, and we have a cell phone number to contact their people in case they are unhappy and voice those sentiments.
We are sometimes asked why dogs cannot be left unattended in Bed & Breakfast Suites while they can in Kitchen Suites if crated. We have learned from years of hosting many dogs that some do bark and howl when left behind (they are smart enough to know their crate, while familiar, is in a different place), which is very disturbing to other guests. Our Kitchen Suites do not adjoin other guest rooms, so barking cannot be heard in other guest rooms. Our Bed & Breakfast Suites are clustered in the east end of the building; barking dogs can be heard in adjoining rooms.
We are happy to provide information about local doggy day care.
